VALUE BASED EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS

As Education is the most powerful weapon, it determines a person’s entire life. Definitely, it determines a person’s healthy life, future even his behaviour. Education is not merely supplied knowledge, but it moulds a person’s behaviour. Although education has the greatest value, it might be taught to children. This article discusses the ways to teach children the values in schools.

1. The values could be taught in schools

School teachers teach value-based education as a part of education in schools. Value-based education teaches moral, ethical, cultural, social and spiritual value. Swami Vivekananda suggested some important moral values for children. He suggested unconditional love and kindness, honesty, hard work, respect for others, co-operation, compassion and forgiveness as values that should be taught in schools.

2. Why the values should be taught in schools

First, the children spend most of their time in a day in schools with their teachers. Classrooms are the best platform for teaching values. Secondly, value-based education helps a child for all-round development to be a worthy citizen.

Surely, value-based education evolves a child’s character and individual personality. These evolvements might be in physical health and mental health.

Moreover, the children develop their values in etiquettes and social behaviour, civic right and duties. Society needs an unsurpassable person to create a wonderful world.

3. Why the value-based education is vital in schools.

In the modern world, advanced technology evolved tremendously. The school children also use the resources to know the world. At the same time, it is difficult what they supposed to learn.

Even school children failed to respect their teachers since modern education does not depend on the teachers. The teachers may not able to teach the values.

Therefore the value-based education should be implemented in schools since it is vital because our children should be prepared for future roles in society.

Recently, the Maldivian national institute of education has designed the new national curriculum framework which contains the values

  • Values relating to self
  • Values relating to family and others
  • Values relating to the local and global community
  • Values relating to the environment

Moreover, these values have been introduced and implement in Maldivian schools. This system encourages children and young people to embrace the values in their society. And it hopes a positive attitude in children and young people.

Finally, of course, the values teach the children what is right and what is wrong. Hence the school curriculum is one of the best ways to produce valuable human being in society through teaching value-based education in schools.

4. The role of a teacher in teaching value-based education

Drastic changes can be brought into society by an ordinary teacher. First, the teacher should practice the values in his/her life. Then it is easy to instruct the students the value-based education. The teachers are the role models for the students. The teachers’ attitudes impact students’ behaviour. When the teacher prepares the lessons the teacher should consider the values in his/her lesson. It will help the teacher to teach values through the lessons.

The reaching strategy might be discussion, experimentation and instructions. The teacher can organize cultural and sports events which help to develop the values of sharing, cooperation, patience and courteousness. Thought for the day can be displayed in school and class notice board.

Moreover, a short moral speech in assembly every day will help the children to develop moral values. Educational field trip, club activities, visiting historical places, NCC, NSS, Scout, and cadet camps also insist the moral values.

5. The role of parents in teaching value-based education

Parents are very busy with their jobs, business and earnings. Most of the parents are eager about their children’s progress in grades whereas some of them won’t. Sometimes the family problems, parents’ mutual misunderstandings are also the cause of failure in teaching values. Some parents show overprotection and overconfidence in their children.

First, parents teach their children to respect their teachers. Moreover, parents should avoid talking ill about teachers. Finally, being a role model for their children is vital. Children will be affectionate with parents than teachers.

As a conclusion of this article, I would say that if there is no value in education in schools, society will be pooled with too much violence and dishonesty. The theft, drug addicts in teenagers are the root cause of unawareness of moral values.
